Updates and Achievements

June-July 2018 Community Exposure

After our fourth community immersion, you end up realizing how dreadful and utterly satisfying each exposure is. You never get tired of saying that every day, there are new learnings you will never pick up in school or from textbooks but only in field work. Always always, you come home with precious and valuable memories and a sharpened character. These are things not every doctor in training get to experience, they don't put us above anyone but all these things make us a little bit different from the rest.

MALNUTRITION

  • The problem and proposed solutions for the incidence of Malnutrition in the barangay were presented,
  • A Barangay Nutrition Committee (BNC) called the "MamaManguiles," led by the BNS was created,this will initiate and sustain the projects under the HCHM.
  • Team-building, assessment of knowledge and training on proper weight and height taking were conducted amongst the MamaManguiles members.
  • Organized an "Araw ng Nutrisyon" with the Upper Manguiles Elementary School students with the following activities: Lecture, story-telling and demonstration on proper nutrition, proper hygiene and proper hand washing.

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

  • The data on SWM from the previous survey were presented to the barangay officials and community residents.
  • Assessment of the existing knowledge of the community residents was done. Pre-test and post-test questionnaires were distributed as a tool of knowledge evaluation.
  • Waste Analysis and Characterization Study was done. 180 garbage bags labeled as biodegradable and non-biodegradable were distributed to 30 households who fit the set criteria.

INADEQUATE HEALTH CARE DELIVERY SYSTEM

  • The comprehensive health plan was presented during the general assembly and an open forum was facilitated on the current condition and status of the health care delivery system in Brgy. Manguiles.
  • A Focused Group Discussion was conducted with the Barangay Health Workers and former Barangay Health Emergency Response Team (BHERT) on identifying probable cause and solutions to the problem.

UNSAFE DRINKING WATER

  • Gathered data on toilet sanitation was presented to the Barangay Officials and community residents.
  • Lectures on the Importance of safe water utilization, common water-borne diseases by unsafe water sources and usage and various purification methods (SODIS, boiling) were conducted.
  • Pre-test and post-test questionnaires were distributed to the residents present during the lecture.

HYPERTENSION

  • The problem on the high incidence of hypertension and proposed solutions were presented to the barangay officials and community residents.
  • Mass BP Taking per purok was conducted to re-identify and re-assess the number of hypertensive individuals in the brgy.
  • A "Hypertension Day" was organized to discuss the risk factors, signs and symptoms, causes, complications and treatment and management of hypertension. The difference of anemia to hypertension was also tackled.
  • A Zumba session called "Healthy Dancing for the Kasing Kasing" was initiated on Hypertension Day.
  • Pre-test and post-test questionnaires were distributed to the participants.
  • BP Taking followed the lectures and zumba session.
